This is 512 bytes of nonsense, since the Firefox 2 developers, in one of the strangest decisions ever, decided they would obsolete XML styles by overriding them without permission. Furthermore, the developers appear to be disinterested in fixing this. Therefore, we use the unofficial workaround, which includes filling up the first 512 bytes of a document so that the sniffer doesn't encounter the RSS tag. I really enjoy using Firefox, but this particular behavior really annoys me! Anyway, since I'm almost at 512 characters, I'm going to ramble on for another minute in this comment, and then, without further adue, present you with a valid XML feed.

So I’ve been working for a while now on my new BIM for Manufacturers class, videos, presentation, etc and I’m pretty geeked about rolling it out at AU. BIM as many of you know is one of the few ackronyms we through around here… just a few [grin]. It stands for Building Information Modeling and it is absolutely revolutionizing the way in which buildings are designed, constructed, and commissioned. If you are a building product or equipment manufacturer you are already aware of the demands for “BIM content”.

So what architects, contractors, and building owners are asking of you sounds at the surface at least an easy request. “Hey, you already have that thing-a-ma-bob already modeled up – why don’t you just sent that my way so I can put it into my Revit file?” Oh, what’s that you say…. It’s a 15,000 part assembly, and you have every nut bolt and washer, tolerance, drilled and tapped hole, folded and unfolded sheet metal parts built into that model. Well that’s just too much detail, why would you put that much detail into a 3D model…. Hmmm, maybe its because our entire manufacturing process is derived from my Digital Prototype.

So this is the dilemma that I’m working to resolve. How can I provide information to architects, contractors, and engineers that contains the right information, with the right level of detail, right now?

Ready for it….wait, here it comes – It depends.

That’s Confucius level thinking there eh? Did you hear the harpsichord in the background while you read the ultimate answer – It depends… I did.

But seriously it depends on two key things. Your current deliverables – are you a 2D or 3D house. Second it depends on your desired result – is this a situation where I can send “the” exact configuration of a specific order to the architect, or do I want to market my products through an online resource designed specifically to host product specifications and design files?

So you see what I mean then, right? It honestly depends. Over the next month I’m going to be rolling out workflows for four key profiles in this process.

1. 2D design houses that are happy to be 2D for now but still need to create 3D BIM content. Without slowing down engineering production.

2. Autodesk Inventor houses that want to protect intellectual property, but also want to provide BIM content without remodeling what has already been modeled.

3. AnyCAD houses that can utilize the tools designed specifically to simplify models using native translators and AEC Exchange functionality again to provide BIM content without remodeling.

4. Houses that want to publish a catalog of products, in multiple formats, and host that data on an online resource designed to host product specification and design files.

So a lot of information coming out after Autodesk University. Stay tuned and I hope to see many of you in two weeks in Las Vegas baby!. (what you can’t say Vegas without saying Vegas Baby….right?)

Announcing Update 1 for Autodesk Vault 2010 family of products. This contains several roll ups of previously hotfixes, as well as new addressed issues like:

Property related operations (such as Checkin, Property ReIndex) may stop responding as a result of application pool becoming automatically disabled in Windows 2008 operating system. This Update 1 addresses this operating system incompatibility

Custom properties with white space do not get brought into Vault 2010 correctly

Improved behavior of Copy Design of a substituted part resulting in the new part referencing the original derived assembly

In a rare case a software license may not be released appropriately

Reinstate the Locked File Icon for user visibility

Files locked in a 2009 dataset, and then migrated to 2010, cannot be unlocked. Receive message "You do not have adequate permissions to perform this operation." ACL cannot be removed.

Note the Lock Icon reinstatement. This is my favorite part of this update. Whether you use released Items or document lifecycle states, this will show properly in Inventor.

Disable AutoUpdate - Autodesk Design Review 2010

Some customers chose to disable the AutoUpdate functionality in previous releases. This was a workaround if the product started up very slow, initially or even locked up.

We did take note of that when finalizing Autodesk Design Review 2010, unfortunately we did not have enough time to implement a solution for both, standalone and network deployments. In the end, only network deployments did benefit from an update.

To summarize, the AutoUpdate functionality is disabled by default in Autodesk Design Review 2010, once the application has been deployed - however, it still exists when installed as standalone application.

Users can, once more, workaround the issue by setting the following values:

InitialCheck 1

DoNotShowAgain 1

Different registry locations are applicable, so we have listed the most common ones here:

Windows XP 32bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

Windows XP 64bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6423Node\Autodesk\Designreview\Settings\AutoUpdate

HKEY_CURRENR_USER\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

Windows Vista 32bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\Software\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

Windows Vista 64bit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\Software\Autodesk\Design Review\Settings\AutoUpdate

Note: It is recommended that you start the application at least once, else there is a good chance that the values of InitialCheck and DoNotShowAgain have not been created yet. If you decide to edit the registry prior to starting Autodesk Design Review 2010, you will have to create those keys manually.

Warning!
Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer operating system unusable. Microsoft has provided a wealth of critical information you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/support.

When creating Inventor drawings, there is a great way to bring over 2D sketch information from the Inventor model. This works well if you have something like text represented on your Inventor model and want to see also have it visible in the Inventor drawing view.

To do this, open a part or an assembly and create a sketch with some text or draw a rectangle. Save the part and create a drawing with a drawing view of the component.

In the browser locate the view that you want the sketch to be visible in and expand the view to show the part or assembly that has the sketch.

Right click on the part or assembly and select "Get Model Sketches" to expose the visible sketches.

Thats it - you will now see all of the visible sketches for that part or assembly. You will also notice it shows them in the browser and you can turn off sketches that you aren't interested in seeing.
